Prothy is cooler than your average rice protein because it’s a hydrolysate. Think of the continuum as going from rice powder > concentrates > isolates > hydrolysates. The smaller size of hydrolysates make it more bioavailable and also hypoallergenic – that, and its great tolerability, makes it perfect for infant nutrition. It comes organic if need be.
Pea protein is clearly blowing up! World Food Processing is a family-owned farm in Iowa that provides non-GMO and organic soy and pea proteins, especially flours and isolates. Good for cereals, bars and beverages. This company has the robust supply chain of non-GMO soy and pea with its farms that spread through six states in the Midwest.
Pea protein is a very attractive space to be in right now. It’s got the strongest message and is dominating the legume space, according to Frost & Sullivan’s Chris Shanahan. Sports applications are more open to pea protein than in the past. Advantein is a complete protein, containing all 18 amino acids, at proper ratios, to count as a complete protein. Gabiotein has a smoother taste compared to other rice protein, says AIDP. It’s a sprouted brown rice protein – sprouting also lowers anti-nutrients like phytic acid, which prevents absorption of minerals. Risapro is AIDP’s other rice protein offering.
Great for functional foods and ready-mix powders, Ecuadorian Rainforest offers fava bean, black bean and chick pea powders. They also do business with rick and soy protein powders.
Pea protein joined the protein party three years ago – partly as a backlash against soy – and today is all the rage. Pisane pea protein isolates are non-GMO, Kosher and Halal, and contain between 88 and 90 percent protein. It’s got a PDCAAS score of 0.98 – 1.0 is considered egglike in its perfect amino acid score. And it can do it without affecting color, taste or texture of finished products – not to mention being more price-stable than dairy proteins. It’s made specifically for manufacturers that want to make high-protein baked goods or high-protein bars.
Protein aplenty is what Batory Nutra is all about. Even its plant proteins portfolio has 10 varieties to choose from, from soy isolates and grits to wheat, pulses and ancient grains. Pea protein is of course trending, and Batory offers it in 55% or 85% concentrates – the higher percentage gets rid of the more insoluble protein and ancillary material, making it easier to work with in beverages especially.

Protein continues its upward trajectory, based on consumer demand for the only macronutrient to have never taken a health hit. The non-animal protein segment, in particular, is eating into whey protein’s market share, especially among those who don’t sweat in a gym for hours every day.
The mega-trends driving growth for the plant protein segment, according to Chris Shanahan at Frost & Sullivan, include emerging markets, health & wellness, willing to pay for quality, being green, and food safety.
We assayed the show floor at Ingredient Marketplace, the raw material supplier show in Orlando, Fla., last week. Here’s a selection of ingredient suppliers that can make your finished product stand out in a world of protein love.
