This family-owned business in rural Alabama specializes in certified-organic, sprouted whole grain flours and ingredients such as black beans and garbanzos. The company sources, sprouts, dries, and mills each and every ingredient, and they now have a dedicated gluten-free facility to process their 12 gluten-free sprouted flours and grains, including amaranth and millet. The upshot: They’re doing it right.
These tasty combos feature high-protein, high-fiber, low-fat sprouted lentils. Several of them are gluten free, and all are boosted with other “superfoods” including goji berries, dried cherries, and quinoa.
This company's kicky LOL (Live Out Loud) popped chips are certified gluten-free, Non-GMO Project Verified, and made with sprouted grains and seeds, such as sunflower, quinoa, and flaxseed, with a particular focus on superfood chia. I’m loving the Jalapeno Harvest Cheddar with chia.
Built on the premise that tortilla chips don’t have to be bad for you, Way Better Snacks incorporate organic sprouted flax, black beans, broccoli seeds, brown rice flour, quinoa, chia, and—a curve ball—daikon radish to make super tasty, crunchy chips. Non-GMO Project verified, too. I loved the seasonal Oh My Sweet Pumpkin Cranberry chips.
These are the first sprouted baby cereals I’ve ever seen, made with sprouted gluten-free quinoa, gluten-free brown rice, or wheat—a major improvement over traditional white-rice cereal. The company also offers “living flours” with sprouted flax, barley, wheat, rice, and multigrain. And they’re all USDA Organic (thereby non-GMO) with bright, fun packaging.
I snagged a sample of this non-GMO bakery’s new sprouted-grain pizza crust and was wowed by the terrific texture and taste. They also make fantastic sprouted-grain breads, buns, and rolls.

Sprouted ingredients, one of the oldest “health food” trends, are experiencing new life in the natural foods world. Sprouted foods—nuts, seeds, grains, and/or beans that are soaked and allowed to germinate (sprout), thus freeing the nutrients that are otherwise difficult for the body to digest and assimilate—are not quite seed, not quite plant, but they add legit health benefits to items like flours, chips, and snacks. Here are 6 back-to-the-roots foods seen at Natural Products Expo East 2013.
