5 best vegan products from ExpoEast 2013
This convenient, family-friendly, soy- and gluten-free ground meat replacement is made with pecans and garbanzos and comes in three flavors: original, Mexican spice, and Italian spice. Simply mix with egg replacement (or egg, if you’re not vegan) plus water, stir, and heat in a pan. At Expo, I sampled Neat in mini tacos, and if I were less scrupulous I would have grabbed a whole tray and ran.
I can hardly believe these yummy vegan foods don’t contain butter or eggs. Featuring a flakey crust surrounding either a rich black bean or mushroom filling, they live up to their tagline, “Making Crabby People Happy Since 2008.” (I love their promo video, too.) And they do good by partnering with Seattle organizations to feed and create jobs for the homeless.
Made by a German company, these nutritional-yeast-based, organic, no-soy spreads are brand-new to the U.S. and absolutely delicious. Unfortunately the packaging and industrial-sounding name don’t do them justice! I’m hoping they’ll rebrand and launch these innovative products soon. I kept going back for seconds and thirds, especially for the shiitake flavor.
Incredibly, these vegan bars actually taste different—in a good way—than all the others in the crowded bar aisle. Each one provides 1,000mg tea for health benefits you can actually taste (my fave: Vanilla Earl Grey). They’re also certified organic, gluten free, and made with conscious capitalism principles, including clean sourcing, package recycling, and crowd-sourced ideas for directing 3 percent of pre-tax profits.
Lots of people say they can’t “go vegan” because they’d miss cheese too much. That excuse is now moot, thanks to this new line of vegan, French-style cheeses. Made of nuts and herbs, with no soy, lactose, or palm oil, they come in incredible flavors, such as herb-garlic and cracked pepper; they’re also beautifully packaged. I’m now addicted to the soft-spread varieties, and the just-as-good hard cheeses are launching this fall. Can’t wait!

Oh, the joys of vegan eating in 2013. Plant-based foods have come such a long way—incredible flavor, awesome texture, clean ingredients—that there’s every reason tuck in. Whether you’re a vegan eater or not, these delicious foods, seen at Natural Products Expo East 2013, are worth every bite.
