Campisi Citrus: The authentic Sicilian citrus experience

Campisi Citrus is a fourth-generation processing industry, owned by the Campisi family, leaders in the Sicilian citrus sector since the 1960s. Giuseppe and Dario Campisi, the third generation, led the expansion of the company throughout the past four decades. Together with his son Roberto, Giuseppe is in charge of fresh citrus fruits production at Azienda Agricola Campisi Antonino and Campisi Group. Together with his daughter Ludovica, Dario is the General Manager at O.P.A.C. (Organizzazione di Produttori Antonino Campisi), selling citrus fruits and vegetable to some of the largest European supermarket chains. In 2015, Giuseppe and Dario decided to close  the supply chain by founding Campisi Citrus, the processing industry. Nowadays, the two cousins, Antonino and Barbara Campisi, manage this latest addition to the company group.

Indeed, Campisi Citrus is the only Italian citrus industry to operate on an organic closed-supply chain. The vertical integration ensures full traceability and the most rigorous standards of quality, while holding sustainability and innovation as core values.

In the next five years, the family will carry out an expansion plan, bringing more and newer citrus extraction machineries, which will not only allow for a larger volume of production, but also improved quality standards thanks to the innovative refined technologies.

The portfolio of citrus specialties includes the following:

  • Frozen fruit juices: not from concentrated and non-pasteurized, not from concentrated and pasteurized, concentrated

  • Frozen fruit parts: pulp cells, zests, slices, wedges, whole citrus

  • Cold-pressed essential oils: pure and natural, folded, terpenes

Campisi Citrus’ unique value proposition is not only the closed supply chain, but also the promotion of premium regional varieties, such as the Protected Geographical Indications.

As a matter of fact, Siracusa represents the largest area in terms of national lemon production, with a specific variety that can only be found in this region, the Siracusa Femminello PGI. This cultivar has five blossoms during the year, three with  yellow winter fruits, Primofiore, Bianchetto, and Maggiolino, and two green summer ones, Verdello and Agostaro.

The production and sales of this fruit is regulated by a Consortium, which foundation has been guided by the Campisi family, amongst others. Nowadays, Antonino and Barbara Campisi are part of the Board of Directors, supporting its promotion and development worldwide.

Together with the Siracusa lemon, Sicily prides itself with another protected variety, the Blood Orange, specifically the Moro, Tarocco, and Sanguinello. This fruit, cultivated in the areas surrounding the Etna volcano, became well known worldwide for its dark-red color. This is due to the anthocyanin level, higher than any other type of orange.

Additionally, the portfolio includes other Sicilian premium fruits, such as the Sicilian Tahiti Persian lime, pink grapefruit, red and green mandarin, watermelon, and pomegranate.

With quality and sustainability at the forefront of the daily operations, Campisi Citrus owns several certifications, such as BRC, IFS, FSSC 22000, Kosher, Halal, FDA, JAS, Global Gap and Grasp. Moreover, the company is a members of EFEO, the European Federation of Essential Oils, and IFEAT, the International Federation of Essential oils and Aroma Trades.
