Biohm Probiotic Supplement with Super Greens 8.5 ounces SRP: $59.99 The sell here is the 15 billion active cultures containing four species of bifidos, lactobacillus and S. boulardii. Then it burnishes its gut-health bona fides with a digestive enzyme blend and nearly 3 grams of fiber. Then there’s another nearly 5 grams of a "super greens" blend containing 31 ingredients from spirulina and barley grass to adaptogens and echinacea. It dissolves pretty well, with a greenness you don’t think is going to be that sweet. “Tastes like jelly beans!” said Hannah. Chris concurred: “I could drink that.”
Nordic Naturals Marine Collagen 5.29 ounces / 150 grams SRP: $33.96 Sourced from wild-caught Arctic cod, this collagen is fairly odorless, colorless and has no taste profile. All collagen seems to have some difficulty completely dispersing in water, which is why I prefer to just mix it in the blender with my smoothie mixers, so that it's unnoticeable.
NOW Sports Beet Root Powder Sport Nutrition 12 ounces SRP: $10.78 or $19.99 Straight-up beet root powder with zip, zero, nothing else added. Mixed with water and it’s burgundy, though it lies somewhere in terms of taste between an actual burgundy and that red gelatinous stuff that comes out of a can on Thanksgiving. A pretty mild, earthy, beet-red flavor actually. I drank it and then headed out for a bike ride. Hannah thinks beets are gross but admitted she’d allow it in a smoothie. “Yeah, I like it,” said Katie, the mom. “Put a frozen mango cube in there.”
Nutrex Hawaii Pure Hawaiian Spirulina 5 ounces SRP: $17.59 Grown in open ponds on the Big Island’s sunny side, this pure spirulina is uber-green yet surprisingly taste-neutral. It’s free of gluten, lactose, soy, corn, wheat and yeast. While it’s not recommended to mix it with water, the smell (and color) is more potent than the taste, and you could get away with doing so.
PlantFusion Complete Plant Collagen Builder 11.43 ounces SRP: $43.99 People want collagen for skin health but sometimes they don’t want it from the typical animal sources. PlantFusion has a creamy powder that builds collagen, hydrates collagen, and protects collagen. The panel was not thrilled with the flavor in water, but the creaminess would make a great accent to a smoothie.
Pure Essence Ionic-Fizz Magnesium Plus 171 grams or 6.03 ounces SRP: $22.79 Magnesium is great—the master mineral. However, all too often it comes in powders with that effervescent fizz. It’s necessary—the fizz is the carbonate that has broken its bond with magnesium ions, and those ions are absorbed more efficiently than if they were bound by carbonate or other substances such as malate or citrate. But the effervescence kills my smoothie. Pure Essence has some sweet flavors such as raspberry lemonade that make it stand alone well in water; there's still a hint of fizz, but it’s not the main feature, which is appealing.
Symbiotics Colostrum plus powder 6.3 ounces / 180 grams SRP: $43.99 Ahh, mother’s milk. The very first drops of it are called colostrum, and it’s chock full of immune-supporting antibodies, proteins and vitamins. It looks a lot like mother’s milk, with a “distantly milky” taste, said Chris, while Hannah called its taste “subtle” and Katie (the mother among us) said it simply “tastes good.”
VegiDay Vegan Organic All In One Shake & Go 12.7 ounces SRP: $27.97 Pea-forward flavor contains 21 grams of protein per serving along with a multi’s worth of vitamins and minerals, plus a “live greens base” of nearly 3 grams of two dozen different grasses and vegetables such as alfalfa and barley grass, carrots and broccoli. The whole formula is vegan, non-GMO, certified USDA organic, gluten-free and raw. The consensus of the panelists was “not bad” in water, a little gritty, but better in smoothies.

Nutritional powders are the ultimate clean label supplement—no non-nutritive fillers, binders or gelatin to be concerned about (well, maybe a natural sweetener or two). We also convened a panel consisting of a millennial, a Gen-Xer, a mother of young children and a middle-aged man to taste them both within smoothies and alone in water to help you better sell these powders to your customers.
