Fabalish Fab-a-Dip Fabalish’s organic Fab-a-Dip is a creamy, zippy dip that would elevate any veggie tray, and the dip is versatile enough to also be a great sandwich spread, savory toast topper or thinned into light pasta sauce. The taste profile is most akin to a chipotle mayo. The aquafaba (chickpea water) base lends body to the dip, and any bean-y taste is mostly hidden under savory notes from kombu seaweed, gentle smokiness from cumin and tanginess from lemon juice, apple cider vinegar and white vinegar. A smattering of other organic spices and seasonings round out this complex blend, but the shocker is how vegan and un-bean-y it is with a clean label. Egg, dairy and coconut free, this product will make vegans do a double take with the ingredients panel and will win over omnivores too. Fila Manila Filipino American Kitchen Filipino Adobo Sauce and Marinade Fila Manila Filipino American Kitchen founder Jake Deleon brings a versatile sauce from his family’s cookbook to the condiment aisle with this Filipino Adobo Sauce & Marinade. This Filipino staple is tangy, savory, and salty all at once, and Fila Manila’s take on this iconic sauce is both a great entry point to the cuisine and an attractive new option for aficionados with its clean, minimal ingredient list and use of tamari over wheat-based soy sauce. These modest updates to typical conventional versions cut no corners with authenticity; the sauce gets some of its zip from coconut vinegar, yum! As though that wasn’t enough to be excited about, the brand also regularly partners with AAPI non-profits including Project Barkada most recently; the effort provided 300 free meals to frontline workers and families in need living in underserved communities. Maya Kaimal Foods Indian Style Green Chili Sauce Maya Kaimal Indian Style Green Chili Sauce brings regional flair to the too-often monolithic representation of Indian food and a unique new profile to the hot sauce shelf. The serrano, coconut and curry leaf backbone draw heavily from a standard chutney of South Indian cuisine, which is relatively underrepresented in the array of Indian foods most familiar to the American palate. Thinning the traditional chunky chutney into a squeezable consistency akin to familiar East Asian-inspired chili sauces, this condiment would be equally at home on basics like eggs or roasted potatoes as it would be as a final touch on more complex dishes such as fusion tacos, soups or sandwiches. While the taste will practically transport you to a Goan beach, one thing that isn’t transported is the product itself; Maya Kaimal Foods’ commitment to American manufacturers means that the brand produces domestically and does not ship finished goods from abroad.
Country Life Vitamins Menopause Rescue The menopausal “power surges” are no fun for any woman of a certain age. The active ingredient here, EstroG-100, does everything right. It’s the rare ingredient with an NDI approval from the FDA, vouchsafing safety. Comprised of three botanicals, it is also registered as safe food materials in the Korean FDA and received EU Novel Foods status. In a four-month human clinical on American women, EstroG-100 significantly improved 10 of the 12 primary menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats, fatigue, low energy, nervousness, sleeplessness and vaginal dryness. This is three times better than other natural, botanical-based products clinically tested using the same Kupperman model. A follow-up, three-month study by different researchers came to the same conclusion—10 of 12 symptoms significantly improved. Flora Stressveda Here is another quality supplement with a signature branded ingredient to power performance. Here, the KSM-66 ashwagandha, at the clinically validated dose of 600 mg, is used. KSM-66 boasts 13 published “gold standard” human clinical trials, focusing on things that may affect one’s productivity in life—stress relief and brain health as well as sports performance and sexual health. In a representative study on 64 people with a history of chronic stress, 300 mg twice daily of KSM-66 for 60 days led to a big drop in cortisol levels (the “stress hormone”), which both helped them deal with stress better and had them report a better quality of life. A multivitamin’s worth of letter vitamins derived from plant sources. Bay State Milling Flourish Fiber from the Farm High Fiber All-Purpose Flour Civilizations have been built on bread grains, and civilizations can be so healed. The result is an all-purpose flour that meets the basic health needs of humans, while addressing the health of the agricultural system. Fila Manila Filipino American Kitchen Ube Coconut and Purple Yam Jam While carrying the name jam and often compared to peanut butter, those familiar with Ube jam know the stuff to be neither peanut butter nor jelly. Thick and sweet, it is tasty and satisfying, and Fila’s is even more so by virtue of being free of artificial colors, flavors and excess sugars. Nor is it imported, a point of pride for the New Jersey-based FilAm (Filipino American) community that birthed this product. Ocean's Balance Mariner's Arrabbiata Pasta Sauce Ocean’s Balance has produced a good, classic Arrabbiata, though the recipe is anything but classic. Sustainably harvested kelp slips and slides into the ingredient panel just behind tomatoes and oil but does so without dominating the flavor profile. Still spicy and tomatoey, the sauce benefits from extra minerals (iodine, calcium, iron, potassium), protein and umami. It may be the kelp farmers that benefit most, however, as this crop provides a counter-cyclical harvest—especially important with the current volatility of the local Maine fisheries. Otamot Foods Organic Pizza Sauce Fun fact: Americans consume over 350 slices of pizza each second! We’re taking Otamots word on that. What we’re not taking its word on is the top-notch flavor and organic goodness. Like other Otamot sauces, this no-added sugar, preservative-free sauce begins with a long list of veggies—true to the brand’s mission to push more vegetables into kid’s (and adult’s) diets—and moves right along to good, classic pizza flavor. Yishi (by Crave) Taro Bubble Tea Organic and Gluten-Free Oatmeal Packing functional ingredients and Asian-inspired flavors into oatmeal is what Yishi is all about. Here, certified organic, high-fiber, gluten-free oatmeal is boosted with taro and coconut milk for a rich flavor and mouthfeel reminiscent of bubble tea. No actual bobas here, but there is black tea, a hint of sweet from erythritol and stevia and some protein and texture provided by hemp, flax, chia seeds and almond flour. Introduced in the cup format, the new pouch brings it to the whole family at once.

Spinster Sisters Rosemary Mint Conditioner Bar Committing to reducing packaging waste in one’s beauty routine is no small feat. It conditions hair with ingredients including shea butter and argan oil, with a touch of hydrolyzed oats, rosemary and mint. The company is currently in the verification stage for B Corp certification, and it’s also planning on becoming Climate Neutral certified in 2022. A totally clean, great-smelling way to keep plastic bottles out of landfills.
For the Biome Gut-Lung Therapy Scientists are still working on the details—and there are lots of them—but it’s clear that every system in the body is connected to what goes on in the gut. But while much has been said of the “brain-gut axis” and what the microbiome can do for immunity, very little is said about the lungs. That effectively grants For the Biome a market all to its own. What the brand has done with that opportunity is pair fermented botanicals to produce postbiotics that are then paired with a probiotic strain that evidence shows can improve respiratory health. Founded by Paul Schulick, who also launched New Chapter, the brand is charting a bold course. That this innovation comes from a brand with For the Biome’s history and integrity adds credibility to the claims. Kaged Muscle Pro-Biotic Premium Performance Probiotic The probiotics and sports nutrition markets don’t overlap as much as the science would seem to justify. What you eat is obviously important to the active lifestyle pursuits, but how your body digests that food is routinely ignored. Into that underpopulated overlap, Kaged Muscle comes talking about “the gut-muscle axis” and promises a product that builds endurance and reduces fatigue. We like that the TWK10 probiotic Kaged Muscle employs is sourced from Taiwanese kimchi and promoted as clean label, but we especially like that the ingredient provider is Lonza, a company known for strong science. Now we’re waiting to see what other brands do to bring gut health and active lifestyle health together. Nutritional Roots Probiotics+ The gut-brain axis has been talked about for years and anybody who has had an upsetting moment that led to an upset stomach knows how strong that link is. Surprisingly, however, we have not seen a lot of formulations that attempt to compliment the probiotic components in their formula with ingredients from the herbs and botanicals toolbox to boost the efficacy. Nutritional Roots does just that with its Probiotics+, employing herbals that include ashwagandha and valerian root, as well as bringing in enzymes to fine-tune the formulation. The backstory of an “Appalachian root doctor” who graduated from medical school is also compelling, as is the use of recycled plastics in bottles that are engineered to be 60% lighter.

The company chose to focus on mushrooms—which are among the most sustainably produced foods in the U.S.—and to support biodiversity by avoiding the six biggest crops that represent more than half of all agriculture output. The climate-friendly mushrooms are marinated and wood-smoked for a salty-sweet plant-based jerky that is free of gluten and soy. The certfiied organic jerky comes in five flavors: Sea Salt + Cracked Pepper, Hickory Smokehouse, Teriyaki Ginger, Maple Mustard and Habanero BBQ. GoodSam Organic Dry-Roasted and Salted Macadamia Nuts This B Corp-aspiring brand encourages support for small farmers with this delicious salty snack. By working directly with a group of 5,000 small holder Kenyan farmers who have developed a regenerative farming system, GoodSam is able to source its nuts responsibly. The company uses an advanced digital infrastructure to keep track of organic fertilizers and materials required by the farm, and even makes digital direct payments into the farmers' personal bank accounts. Macadamia nuts are the most keto-friendly nut, and this just-launched organic and regeneratively farmed option should be a favorite for those adhering to a keto diet. Tia Lupita Foods Cactus Tortilla Chips with Sea Salt Tia Lupita's chips provide the crunch and texture tortilla chips lovers are used to, but instead of corn, these chips are made from nopales, or cactus. The use of this underutilized ingredient means not only are these chips gluten free and grain free, but they are also planet-friendly since cactus is harvested twice a year, is drought-resistant and grows practically anywhere. Utilizing this ingredient also opens up new supply opportunity for farmers in Mexico. The cactus is combined with cassava, coconut flour and chia seeds for a crunchy snack. Tia Lupita Food's mission to bring healthier Mexican favorites—for people and planet—is something to get behind. Laird Superfood Renew Original Plant-Based Protein Powder Laird Superfood’s Renew Original Plant-Based Protein delivers 19 grams of protein and all nine essential amino acids like many whole-protein supplement products, but the ingredients and taste are what truly set this product apart. Protein from organic seeds of sacha inchi, hemp, cranberry and pumpkin combine with functional extracts from organic mushrooms and organic chorella algae to make a clean-label, unique-tasting plant-based protein formulation. The seeds bring a lightly nutty flavor and organic coconut sugar, organic cinnamon and freeze-dried coconut water add some sweetness, warmth and fuller mouthfeel, respectively. What’s most impressive is what’s “missing” from this product: the chalkiness and bitterness present in so many other protein powders. Also importantly missing from this product is artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners or animal-based ingredients, which makes it perfect for not only vegans and vegetarians, but also for anyone seeking a more digestible protein supplement. Nutricare USA Strap Natural Bamboo Body Tape Nutricare USA, a B Corp, brings its newest product Strap to market as an environmentally friendly alternative to rigid sport and body tape. Most often spotted on calves, quads, hammies, biceps and beside joints of concern, this tape style is a favorite of athletes or anyone seeking to alleviate pressure on an ailing muscle or joint. Strap not only delivers on athletic support but also on a zero-waste promise. The biodegradable natural bamboo fiber and compostable packaging stand out in a product category fueled by plastics, PVCs and acrylics. Vegan and non-toxic, Strap purports to be more breathable and gentler on skin than conventional counterparts. Who wouldn’t want to avoid rashes and involuntary hair removal? The benefits don’t stop there; in partnership with Trees for the Future, Nutricare also plants a tree for every new door and every online sale—over 45,000 to date.
Big Mountain Foods The Original Chickpea Tofu Big Mountain Foods has created a tasty tofu with 14 grams of protein per serving, but with chickpeas instead of traditional soy. This innovative ingredient swap makes the product allergen friendly without sacrificing on a firm and creamy texture. Even better, the company upcycles the tofu biproduct known as Okara into a chickpea starch used as a substitute for corn starch, which makes the production of the chickpea tofu zero-waste. Good Groceries Company Suzie's Organic Gluten-Free Red Lentil Couscous Suzie’s has launched one of the first gluten-free couscous options on the market, with a delightfully simple ingredient list: organic red lentil flour and water. This product is a great replacement for traditional wheat-based couscous with its similar fluffy texture. The benefit of using red lentils, though, is higher protein and fiber than its wheat counterparts, in addition to its gluten-free certification. Fody Foods Plant-Based Vegan Bolognese Pasta Sauce Fody has continued its mission to meet the needs of sensitive stomachs with the first onion- and garlic-free vegan Bolognese on the market. In addition to the base of tomatoes in the sauce, Fody adds unique ingredients including kabocha squash, walnuts and shiitake mushrooms, giving this sauce a rich, deep flavor without alliums or animal products, allowing its low FODMAP certification. Fody is also a B-Corp— emphasizing its commitments to people and planet. Core Foods Keto Chewy Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Plant-Based Bar Core has launched a fudgy and delicious chocolate bar that tastes indulgent, all while being certified keto, vegan, gluten free and non-GMO. CORE uses allulose as the sweetener in its products, which lacks the artificial sweetener taste sometimes found in keto products. These tasty bars can be found in the refrigerated aisle, which allows them to be clean label, high in fiber and address many special diets without sacrificing flavor. Misha’s Black Truffle Non-Dairy Cheese Spread Misha’s black truffle cheese is rich, indulgent and the perfect addition to a cheese platter, but without the dairy. This cashew-based cheese is 100% vegan, lactose-free, paleo and keto. The elegant packaging houses a gourmet flavor profile and incredibly creamy textured cheese that is hard to put down.

Dream Pops Bites are soy and dairy free, with less than 100 calories and less than 7 grams of total sugar (mainly derived from coconut blossom sugar instead of cane sugar). Achieving organic certification would elevate this impressive product even higher. Ethel's Baking Company Turtle Dandy Absolutely decadent, these bars from Ethel's Baking Co. are true indulgence. The homemade-tasting turtles are created for the gluten-free tribe but will satisfy everyone. Positioned in the fresh bakery department, these impressive bars fill a void for a fresh-baked gluten-free sweet treat option. However, these dandies rival gluten-full ones and are certified gluten-free, non-GMO and hand-layered (it takes four hours to make a single batch). Ethel's, named after the founder's grandmother who taught her to bake as a child, supports local Michigan organizations that work to combat homelessness and provide housing for those in substance use recovery. Otto's Naturals Grain-Free Ultimate Cookie Mix "Ultimate" is an appropriate word to describe this grain-free cookie mix from Otto's Naturals. Made with the company's own premium cassava flour, which it developed with a group in Brazil to ensure it will perform as well as its wheat-based counterparts, this cookie mix takes a "kitchen sink" approach to make customizable cookies with whatever each home baker has in their pantry. As a partner of the Autism Hope Alliance, Otto's Naturals provides busy parents a delicious option for families living with restrictive dietary needs and developmental disabilities. The cookie mix, which is free from the top eight allergens and certified organic, is sure to delight kids and adults alike.
Designs for Health Fx Chocolate Sunshine Essential Vitamins Vitamins D and K2 have emerged as a potent one-two punch as they are both fat-soluble vitamins and play a central role in calcium metabolism—without D3 and K2, calcium cannot do its job effectively. The combo offers greater support for bones and the immune and cardiovascular systems together than either does individually. Recent studies have also found correlations between low levels of both vitamins D and K2 and COVID-19 outcomes. Both nutrients are combined here in an awesome delivery format—chocolate! The 60% dark cacao uses the alternative sweetener allulose. Talk about a spoonful of (no) sugar helping the medicine go down—yum! Enviromedica Terraflora Broad Spectrum Synbiotic Advanced Care It’s starting to get real in the probiotics and digestive-health space. Brands are taking well-characterized probiotic strains and blending them with a prebiotic lunch box for the beneficial bacteria to create a synbiotic. This first-to-market GRAS-affirmed probiotic strains Ribospore and Bacillus megaterium EM144 are spore-based strains that are naturally guarded against heat and stomach acid so they arrive in the gut intact and alive. That also makes them shelf-stable, so no refrigeration required. The product also uses bacteriophages, which consume bad bacteria and actively support the proliferation of beneficial bacteria in the gut. The bacteriophage complex is backed by two human clinical trials proving efficacy in both the small and large intestine. Terraflora Advanced Care is vegan, GMO-free, allergen-free, and is made without stearates, fillers, binders or flow agents. Laird Superfood Renew Rest and Recover Superhero surfer Laird Hamilton has developed an easy, single-serve satchel powder designed to help active people wind down and get to sleep—because rest and recovery is an integral part of anybody’s active lifestyle. This earthy blend includes tart cherry (a natural source of melatonin), acerola cherry, chamomile, hops, baobab, reishi mushroom and magnesium from Aquamin that’s sustainably derived from seaweed and seawater. Because where else would a surfer want his minerals to come from but the ocean? The powder is dairy-free, vegan and gluten-free. LifeSeasons Clinical Immunity Quick-Start The immune-support supplements aisle has never been more crowded. Every big-time supplements company has reformulated or developed anew an immunity supplement. What makes this one stand out from the crowd is it’s designed to kick-start one’s immunity—immune cells are activated within only two hours—and then it’s to be used for only a week or so. That’s a powerful message—don’t take this forever, just when you really, really need it. It contains a veritable kitchen sink of immune-support ingredients—PureWay-C is absorbed faster and retained longer than regular vitamin C and is mostly responsible for that quick jolt of immune cells. There’s also EpiCor, a clinically validated branded ingredient that got its start from a company whose HR department noted everyone working with it got sick way less often than those in the company who didn’t. Then the product provides classic immune support from elderberry, herbals, prebiotics, probiotics, vitamin D3 and zinc.
GoodSam Organic Dark Chocolate Candy Coated Peanuts Peanuts are a good platform for sweet treats but, let’s face it, they can be a good platform for taking something simple and turning it into an artificially caked mound of meh. GoodSam has gone in a good direction with its candy-coated peanuts, using organic certified ingredients including regeneratively grown cacao and peanuts sourced straight from small farms. The brand also went with non-GMO allulose for a sweetener, choosing an ingredient that comes without an aftertaste on the tongue and without the reservations many consumers have with more artificial sweeteners. The result is a clean-label keto snack that is low in carbs and high in taste. SkinnyDipped Peanut Butter and Jelly Peanuts Occasionally, you stumble on a snack product that has you asking, “Where has this been my whole life?” from the first bite. Deliciously simple in concept and undoubtedly challenging in execution, peanuts wrapped in jelly becomes something that seems obvious until you realize you’ve never had one before. That SkinnyDipped can do this without a long list of multisyllabic ingredients is the real treat. We counted 13 ingredients and were happy to see the word “organic” keep coming up. Solely Organic Mango Whole Fruit Gummies Open a pack of fruit gummies at a group playdate and be prepared for judging glances. Many fruit gummies are packed with added sugar and all manner of “what’s that doing in there?” ingredients. Solely comes not just free of added sugar but free of added guilt as well, with an ingredient lists that’s short enough to cut those judging glances short: mano and abscorbic acid (vitamin C); that’s it. Many will argue that real fruit is always better—and they’re mostly right—but nobody is going to argue that bringing a mango, a knife and a cutting board to that playground play date is a practical or good idea. And it’s hard to argue against Solely for taking a lot of the yuck out of fruit gummies.
Laird Superfood Soothe Functional Medium Roast Coffee Laird Superfood’s third venture into functional coffees comes in the form of Soothe, an organic blend adding cardamom, marshmallow root and blueberry to Peruvian coffee for a stomach-soothing blend that counters the harsh effects of coffee. “Functional coffee” might be redundant for millions of Americans, but Laird makes them more so, in this case harnessing the power of diverse polyphenols to create a stomach-soothing blend rich with prebiotic potential. Steeped Coffee Breakwater Blend Organic French Roast Inspiring for its innovative environmentally responsible packaging, Steeped’s Breakwater Blend is also just plain good coffee, slow French-roasted over a sustainable oak wood fire. A B Corp certified company, Steeped has taken fair trade organic coffee and put it into bags a la tea. Steeped’s is not the first, but in this case, both bag and outer film are commercially compostable—a welcome response to the wasteful K-cup trend. And no machine required! Vahdam Teas Ashwagandha Cinnamon Chai Latte A simple just-add-water powder consisting of only five ingredients, Vahdam India’s organic, vegan, low-calorie chai mix delivers on delicious, complex flavor with the soothing benefits and earthy qualities of ashwagandha. The NEXTY Awards recognize the pinnacle of excellence in the natural products industry, elevating impactful brands and products that inspire a healthy, sustainable future for people and planet.
With nearly 600 products and over 700 category nominations for the 2021 Natural Products Expo East NEXTY Awards, the New Hope Network team was joined by a panel of expert judges to evaluate the nominated products using the following criteria:
Innovation: The product or company shows truly creative thinking and execution (not a "me too" approach); uses a newly discovered or rediscovered ingredient, flavor profile, technique or process; fills a legitimate (though perhaps not yet recognized) natural products market need or niche; and/or is predicted to have a longer-term impact in the industry.
Inspiration: The product or company adheres to an unusual or new mission targeting an issue or problem not yet widely addressed; its message/mission is clearly communicated, focused and effective, with real, wide-reaching potential or already proven positive social or environmental impact.
Integrity: The product or company takes a creative, next-gen approach to clean ingredient(s), sustainability, transparency, traceability and safety/security.
On top of an already rigorous judging criteria, for the first time ever this year’s NEXTY Awards judging process implemented an additional step that provided an extra layer of insight for judges.
The weekend before judging commenced, judges were invited to take home some of the products from each category to which they were assigned. By preparing these products in their own kitchens, trying them with their families and observing and experiencing their real-world applications, judges came prepared for the preliminary round with an even greater familiarity with and sense of the applicants.
Even so, the competition was fierce and the selection process was extremely challenging. In the end, 78 products rose to the top.
These 78 products will be judged during a final round of evaluation that will welcome an experienced panel of guest judges to join the New Hope Network team in selecting a single winner within each of the 23 categories.
Only one product per category will be awarded a coveted NEXTY, and winners will be announced in a live virtual event on Sept. 15 from 11:00 a.m. to noon EDT on the Natural Products Expo Virtual Platform. To watch the announcement, you can register for free here.
