9 natural beauty standouts from Natural Products Expo West 2016
A strong connection to nature was what lit a (camp)fire under Juniper Ridge Founder Hall Newbegin to launch this unique line of handcrafted body care not only inspired by nature but literally created from ingredients gathered in the backcountry and often even manufactured in the woods. Newbegin and his team work with forest rangers and nature conservancy organizations to ensure its products love the planet as much as we love them. And its new line—Backcountry by Juniper Ridge—delivers a more accessible price point to bring the foraged beauty trend to more people. Items such as the White Sage Body Wash, which is a more scalable product, is manufactured at the company’s natural fragrance distillery in Oakland.
Perfect for kids, nail biters or anyone who believes that makeup should be nontoxic, this superfun line is USDA Organic and made with barley grass, beets and carrots. While it’s no surprise that the colors don’t have the same longevity as non-edible polishes, they certainly have the ability to leave a long-lasting impression on a category in much need of a makeover.
The popular Korean spa trend of paper masks is going all natural—and we are totally booking an at-home appointment. Not only does the mask feature active plant-based ingredients such as aloe, jojoba and grapefruit, but the sheet itself is made from sustainable tencel fibers (a biodegradable fabric from wood cellulose). This product moisturizes, repairs and brightens thanks to a brightening serum containing vitamin C and citrus extracts.
“Grab-and-go” is no longer reserved for food and beverage. Thanks to its paper and “single-serving” facial masks, Andalou is bringing ultra-convenience to natural beauty with its Beauty 2 Go line. This product also shows that the demand for healthy aging, naturally, isn’t going anywhere by using key ingredients such as fruit stem cells, resveratrol and plant enzymes. We envision Andalou’s Beauty 2 Go products showing up at gyms, airports and spas, in addition to natural retailers.
Big fan of tulsi tea? The ingredient isn’t just nourishing when steeped in hot water. Four Elements sources ingredients from its sprawling organic farm to create botanical skin care and wellness products such as the latest tulsi line. Tapping into its team's vast knowledge of herbalism, Four Elements blends tulsi and comfrey root to offer this clarifying and deeply moisturizing lotion that takes a new approach to this traditional herbal ingredient.
As more research emerges on the potential risks of chemical sunscreen ingredients, mineral sun care continues to shine. Included in Babo Botanicals’ new line of zinc sunscreen products is this convenient stick, which covers all its bases: a high, effective percentage of non-nano zinc; nourishing botanicals (70 percent organic); and sheer application.
It’s fitting that this family-owned apothecary-style line has a little bit of something for the whole family, from mom and dad to baby—beard oil, baby balms, feminine care and more. Though vast, the line contains only products that are carefully crafted and use high-quality natural ingredients. And talk about clean shave: this cream stands out thanks to its simple formula, including raw shea butter, virgin coconut oil and essential oils.

Sourcing, storytelling and safe cosmetics advocacy reigned supreme at Expo West. But a commitment to transparency wasn't the only statement our favorite natural beauty brands made at the show. Companies successfully brought mass market and international beauty innovation to the natural space, satisfying a need for convenience and performance (biodegradable paper facial masks, anyone?). Contemporizing ancient beauty practices, such as aromatherapy and other uses for essential oils, also proved to be a strong trend. And let us not forget our most delicious beauty spotting, edible nail polish, mm, mm good.
