California Governor Jerry Brown on Saturday signed legislation (AB 227) into law to amend Proposition 65 in an effort to curtail what he called "frivolous shakedown" lawsuits stemming from the 27-year-old law. The amendment, which is effective immediately, is limited to on-premises exposures to chemicals created in food preparation, alcoholic beverages, second-hand smoke and vehicle exhaust at a parking garage. The law allows companies that get these types of Proposition 65 violation notices to avoid being sued if they act to correct violations within 14 days, pay a $500 fine and notify those who filed the notice that the problem has been fixed.
