The Greg Steltenpohl Pragmatic Visionary Award stands as a beacon for innovators who blend passion with practical solutions to create meaningful impact. Established in honor of Greg Steltenpohl, the late co-founder of Odwalla and Califia Farms, the award seeks to support early-stage entrepreneurs committed transforming the food system for good. With $100,000 of yearly grant funds available, the initiative offers a unique means of support for the entrepreneurs in our community.

Steltenpohl, known for his trailblazing approach to business and dedication to environmental stewardship, inspired generations to pursue ventures that harmonize profit with purpose. This award encapsulates his legacy by providing grants and mentorship to leaders who share his ethos.

To be eligible, a venture must be an established, for-profit business; operate in the broader food system; identify as plant-centric; and be in the early stages of development. Visit PragmaticVisionaryAward.org for details. The application is due Jan. 15, and the recipient will be notified on Feb. 15.

The award will be presented at the NEXTY Awards Ceremony on March 6, during Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, California.

In 2023, the inaugural $100,000 prize was given to Sarela Herrada and Matt Cohen of SIMPLi for advancing regenerative, ethically sourced foods. In 2024, Navajo farmer Zacharia Ben took home $75,000 for his project Bidii Baby Foods, with Jasberry founder Pettachai Dejkraisak receiving $25,000 for his work with Thai rice farmers.

The initiative is organized and advised by friends and family of Greg Steltenpohl and his colleagues in the natural food community. The Steltenpohl Family Foundation and Califia Farms provided anchor funding while the advisors and co-founders are industry veterans
