"Eco-Atkins" diet for lower cholesterol"Eco-Atkins" diet for lower cholesterol

I hadn't heard of the Eco-Atkins weight-loss diet, but the amusing name caught my eye this morning in a report on Reuters. Essentially Eco-Atkins is a plant-based version of the low-carb, high protein Atkins diet, utilizing plant-based proteins found in gluten, soy, nuts, fruits, vegetables, cereals, and vegetable oils. A recent small study shows that it's more effective than a traditional Atkins diet (heavy on meat and therefore saturated fats) for lowering bad cholesterol levels and blood pressure (thus reducing heart disease risk), while at the same time helping people lose weight. Kind of a no-brainer, huh? Plant-based diets clearly have it going on for nutrition, health benefits, eco-friendliness, and oh yes, good taste.
