A little kitshy, a little vintage. The Belgian Boys manage to make hot-pink work in this Honey Stinger-esque caramel-filled cookie. But whereas Honey Stinger feaures an intimidating bee (wasp?) on their package, Belgian Boys feature cute caricatures of themselves.
Sleek and simple, this brand new pasta sauce manufacturer communicates its elegant use of ingredients with a white label flanked by bold bands of color.
For each flavor, Gatherer’s employs a different woodland creature and color. For example, “Chipmunk’s Choice” contains almonds, peanut butter and maple syrup. Pretty darn cute!
GoodBites are “dark-green” healthy. They’re raw and rolled in hemp seeds; they contain spirulina. But when presented in beautiful glass jars and garnished with a single goji berry, they become ultra-luxurious.
The vertical pastel stripes and beveled-edge logo remind us of an old-fashioned candy shop stationed on Coney Island—fitting for this Brooklyn-based taffy maker.
Simple, sleek and beautiful. Just like Lark’s understated, rosemary-scented shortbread.
Cisse’s newly launched packaging features a black background and thin pink writing—hinting that Cisse’s is an expert in chocolate baking. Plus, the side panel outlines the conscious cocoa bean-to-box journey.
Topped with gorgeous discs of apple or pineapple slices, Grace & I’s graceful take on the lowly fruitcake is contained only with a strip of white paper, crystal cellophane and a sticker, allowing it's beauty to shine through.

Like a coveted Wild West general store treasure, this packaging seems like it was made with a hand-loaded printing press. Olive Sinclair’s similarly charming Sea Salt & Vinegar Caramels are packaged in a sea-worthy container emblazoned with an anchor.
Handcrafted hot sauce deserves a handwritten label, or so it seems. I adore the layout of this label because it manages to convey all the necessary information without seeming cluttered.
Apart from being delicious in their own right (that Roasted Garlic mayo!), these sauces are pretty enough to display on a dining room table. Of course, you could plop down a jar of Hellman’s, but would you really want to?
At first glance there’s nothing spectacular about Dancing Deer’s clamshell cookie packaging. But just look at the size of that Non-GMO Project Verification label! Whereas most manufacturers place the seal small and off-center, Dancing Deer showcases the verification large, and smack in the middle of the pack.

It's not just bright colors and cool typeface. Designing food packaging is a lot more involved—and the stakes are pretty high. Not only must packaging preserve and contain a food, but also it must convey company values, ethics and practices. Plus, it's a main reason why consumers buy products in the first place—remember that snap decisions are made when perusing aisles.
This is why we scoured the floor at the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York City, arguably the best place to seek top-notch packaging. Here, find food packaging that effectively communicates the ethos of each product. (And they're just plain nice to look at!)
