2. COGNITIVE: Doctor's Best has full traceability of its ingredients, which is why it uses MGC's branded ingredient BioPQQ. This is the PQQ used in 14 published studies since the start of the Obama administration, and it is the only PQQ that has received a new dietary ingredient (NDI) approval from the FDA. If it's not BioPQQ, it is technically an adulterated ingredient. PQQ is our favorite new ingredient because it is one of the few ingredients, pharma or otherwise, that can cause mitochondrial biogenesis - it actually creates new mitochondria, which are the power plant of cells. PQQ also has been shown to grow new brain neurons, a possible mechanism for improving memory in aging brains. Note that most research studies on PQQ use 20 mg as an efficacious dose, so shy away from the 10 mg ones. Doctor's Best also has its Natural Brain Enhancers, containing the phospholipid PS and alpha-GPC. These healthy fats feed the brain with what it needs to function. Quality ingredients.
5. CERTIFICATIONS indicate to consumers that independent third parties have vouchsafed the quality of the ingredients therein. Nutrigold is one such company that tests both incoming ingredients as well as the finished products. They're not just a peddler, they don't compromise integrity for success. Their products might be labeled GMO-free, or no stearates, sulfates, dioxides, their fish oil is IFOS verified to be free of heavy metals, their krill is IKOS certified for purity, potency and freshness. Good to see a company wear quality certifications on their sleeves.
2. COGNITIVE: Leave it to Jarrow Formulas to wisely combine PQQ with coQ10, and not because the Q's have it. It's just that both ingredients target the cell's mitochondria only in different ways: While coQ10 excites the mitochondria, PQQ creates more. It's a genius formulation idea, even though while coQ10 is known more for heart health, PQQ seems to target the brain. Still, two excellent organs and the mitochondria might be the most important organelle in the body. We wish Jarrow would have used 20mg PQQ instead of the 10mg here (along with a nice 100mg coQ10 dose), but we like their Q combo.
1. ENERGY: Matrix Health is one of many companies harnessing the power of cordyceps mushrooms as the new energy ingredient. Yet cordyceps is not so much for energy - the type of caffeinated buzz most people think about when they think about energy - but for endurance. That's because cordyceps increases hemoglobin, which is the oxygen-carrying mechanism in the blood. By increasing blood oxygenation, the blood can carry more oxygen, which is good if you're training at altitude. Cordyceps also increases ATP - the energy molecule. Cordyceps and reishi represent the two most experiential of the mushroom class this side of psilocybin. Matrix NRG also provides a veritable multivitamins's worth of letter vitamins. This product comes in sachets, suitable for dispensing into water for a snazzy drink.
3. TELOMERES: TA-65 has an impressive three published studies on its formulation alone, which is based on a specialized astragalus extract. TA-65 preferentially targets the shortest telomeres, which is exactly what you'd most like to have happen. In a mouse study, TA-65 elongated short telomeres and increased the healthspan of elderly mice. Healthspan in this case was defined as the length of time the little fellas were free of the signs of aging, including: glucose metabolism, liver health, hair re-growth, normal cell repair, bone density and blood profiles. The mice didn't actually live longer, but they lived better. TA-65 has the research, but it's wildly expensive. File under: Get what you pay for.
1. ENERGY: Pure Energy Labs has its EnergyPlus SKU - another supplement line based on both cordyceps and reishi. It also comes with a suite of botanicals from adaptogenic astragalus and schizandra to goji berries - plus a dollop of the branded ingredient BioPerine, which is used to enhance the bioavailability of ingredients. The supplement is also heralded as being GMO-free, sugar-free, soy-free, yeast-free, dairy-free, gluten-free and vegetarian.
2. COGNITIVE: Source Naturals is meeting the opportunity gap between consumer desire for brain-directed products and actual products on the market for the noggin. Its Serene Science line includes PQQ Mind; GABA Calm; Magnesium Serene; Theanine Serene with Relora (L-theanine is an amino acid found in green tea that makes you relaxed sans drowsiness, while Relora was talked about by the market-making Dr. Oz); and more. Chill out, Costanza, with the Serene Science line.
4. PERSONALIZED NUTRITION: Speaking of revolution, thanks to the mapping of the human genome, you can now get your very own, personal, only-for-you gene map, and the price point has now dipped to under $100. This means everybody will be getting their own gene map (the truly savvy will add a routine blood draw to the mix), and adjusting their diet and supplement plans accordingly. Exciting times!
1. ENERGY: Country Life's Coenzyme B-Complex contains NADH, a coenzyme that supports energy production. It made scientific headlines a decade ago but never really caught on. It also contains two new ingredients to the supplement world that are kissing cousins to the B vitamins: benfotiamine (hipsters just call it benfo), as well as PQQ - more on PQQ in the slides to come.
3. TELOMERES. The 2009 Nobel Prize winner for medicine took home the prize for work elucidating the value of telomeres - the protective end caps of DNA strands (visualize the tip of shoelaces). Every time DNA replicates, telomeres shorten, and the shorter the telomeres get the faster you age. So protecting telomeres is now seen as a vital pursuit. Even better - accumulating published research shows a range of nutrients can protect and even extend telomere length. Twinlab's idea is to basically take all the minerals that target telomeres and put into a multi and market it as a telomere supporter. Like! For the record and just so you know, other nutrients shown to help telomere health include vitamin D, multivitamins, omega-3s and even what's on the next slide.
5. CERTIFICATIONS. Supplements are the convenient boogeyman for Olympic-style athletes who are nabbed failing drug tests. Is it true? Well, sometimes, yes. So Twinlab rolled out its CleanSeries line of sports nutrition SKUs. Independently certified by the reliable NSF International, and batch-tested by HFL Informed Sport and Informed Choice programs for banned substances, then further tested to be gluten-free and GMO-free. Twinlab is helping athletes get their nutritional edge in a way that ought to satisfy them that they can trust these supplement powders.
