Last month, Jimbo’s...Naturally! announced that its 28,000-square-foot downtown San Diego store achieved LEED Gold certification. The store is the first in the city to achieve this certification, which demands high performance in the areas of sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. Here are some of the highlights of the store’s LEED-approved initiatives.
Jimbo’s uses energy saving equipment throughout the store, including in its offices, where lights are on sensors and timers, and the computers and phones are Energy Star certified. The sales floor, departments and back areas of the store are broken out into zones, set with temperature-control timers, to optimize efficiency. Multiple cooling zones throughout the store also help conserve energy.
Energy-saving LED lights are used throughout the entire store. According to the U.S. Green Building Council—the certifying body behind LEED—lighting can account for about 5 percent of total energy usage. LED lights use about 20 to 25 percent of the energy consumed by incandescents, and they last 25 times as long.
The store’s dairy box cooler has zero leaks. Its glycol refrigeration system is one of the most environmentally friendly, since it has little or no heat emissions into the kitchen (which reduces ventilation and air conditioning requirements), and boasts reduced energy consumption and up to a 25 percent reduction in running costs. Plus, Energy Star coolers (pictured) in the food service areas—the deli and kitchen—ensure further conservation in appliances.
Jimbo’s took great care to choose adhesives, sealants, coatings, flooring, composite wood and furniture that minimize Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions and promote a healthier indoor breathing environment. Forbo flooring, which, according to the company has the lowest footprint of competing brands and a focus on sustainability, is used throughout the entire store.
By installing low-flow fixtures in restrooms, Jimbo’s...Naturally! saves 36,000 gallons of water per year.
