Pittsburgh-based Hippie & French didn’t necessarily open its doors in 2018 with the intent to offer a higher-end experience. According to founder Lindsay J. French, the store’s “extremely picky” product guidelines–and its chic shopping experience–were inspired by conscious shoppers like herself. It starts with the products themselves. “When I’m choosing a new product for the store, a lot goes into that decision,” she says. First, it must be of the highest quality, derived from US-grown, organic and non-GMO hemp. It must be made in small batches by a woman- or minority-owned business. The packaging must fit into the store’s aesthetic. And, it must be full-spectrum. “I’m proud to say you won’t find one single isolate-derived product in my store,” she says. As far as the store’s interior goes, it was important to French that it be welcoming and light, with clean lines and feminine touches, so that shoppers feel comfortable asking questions about CBD, especially as confusion is rampant. (In fact, she says the aesthetic of the store was inspired by her own living room!) That’s why every shopper has a bespoke experience, complete with a personal consultation and customized dosing guide.
Standard Dose launched online in January 2019 as a CBD retailer, offering a curated selection of the most effective and trusted products on the market. But a visit to the three-story retail store in NoMad, an up-and-coming New York City neighborhood, is truly an experience. Shoppers will find not only the finest CBD products but also yoga, meditation, educational workshops and spa services in this self-described wellness experience serving the mind, body and soul. The ground floor houses an interactive display of over 100 ingestible and topical CBD and wellness products, complete with trained educators equipped to guide visitors on uses and benefits. This floor also features a meditation space and tea bar, including a therapeutic skylight installation designed to mimic daily light cycles for mood-boosting benefits. The lower level of the space houses a private spa treatment room, offering services like CBD facials and massages as well as offerings from spa partners on rotational residencies. The final floor is an uncovered rooftop offering shoppers a juice bar and space for monthly movement and yoga sessions, educational programming and community events. Products on the shelf at Standard Dose undergo a rigorous vetting process to ensure efficacy and experience. All brands are required to provide lab test results, and submit their products to Standard Dose independent third-party testing to verify those results. Everything offered at Standard Dose is made with industrial hemp containing less than 0.3% THC.
High-style CBD retailing isn’t just for independents. Luxury department stores are also getting in on the game, with Barneys New York as well as Saks Fifth Avenue offering dedicated spaces for CBD and even cannabis products. Saks Fifth Avenue’s Salon Project, created by celebrity colorist Joel Warren, is a destination for expert stylists, curated products and the latest technology for all things beauty. And in May 2019, the Salon Project unveiled the CBD Beauty Corner at the New York City flagship location, a “shop within a shop” designed to help shoppers and salon-goers understand the benefits of CBD and provide a safe (and beautiful!) space to try the latest products. Barneys New York recently opened The High End in its Beverly Hills location. Going beyond CBD, this shop includes luxury cannabis lifestyle and wellness products spanning the home, jewelry and beauty categories, and features an exclusive partnership with upscale cannabis company Beboe. Products run the gamut from luxury rolling papers to CBD-infused beauty products.
