Best New Organic Food Bluebird Grain Farms Organic Whole Grain Einka, Emmer Farro, Einka & French Lentil Blend Einka, or einkorn, is the most ancient wheat we know of. Bluebird Grain Farms in Winthrop, Washington, specializes in such things. They also specialize in plow-to-package production and organic agriculture. We love this product, which combines not just the sweetness of einka with savory french lentils, but also the way they’ve combined the ancient grain with its complementary nitrogen-fixing rotational crop. “Our goal,” they wrote in their nomination, “is to cultivate and mill the most irresistible, nutrient-rich grain we can, while leaving this land healthier for the next generation.” Amen to that! Otamot Foods: Organic Sauces Consumers looking for nutrient density in pasta sauce often turn to the addition of meat. Otamot’s founder sought to achieve this by adding eight or more organic vegetables to each tomato-forward recipe—in traditional, spicy or carrot Bolognese. All are certified organic, Non-GMO Project verified and contain neither preservatives nor added sugar. We applaud Otamot’s efforts, whether it is to steer consumers to plant-based options, help them squeeze more veggies onto the family table or just to provide a tasty, healthy organic pasta sauce. Kiolbassa Smoked Meats: Organic Tumeric Bell Pepper Beef Sausage Apparently Kiolbassa is the family name. Crazy coincidence, right? It might, therefore, be divinely ordained that they make great sausage. That they do it with certified organic, never frozen, domestically sourced, grass-fed (and grass-finished!) beef, and are “devoted to enriching the lives of others” (including donating thousands of pounds of sausage annually) must come from some other divine inspiration. Whatever the case, that’s a damn good sausage!

Kefir water is a milder, gut-benefitting alternative to kombucha, and it has been used for centuries by indigenous cultures to boost immunity and aid digestion. We love that it this refreshing bev is only sweetened by organic fruit juices. Enroot Sparkling Cold Brew Tea Combining organic sparkling cold brew teas with highly flavorful combinations of herbals and juices, Enroot is a low-calorie, all-natural drinking experience that satisfied every judge on our panel. Enroot is the first startup in food and beverage to create a comprehensive responsible sourcing policy with SCS Global Services. Best New Mission-Based Product Soñar! Foods Grain Free Organic Tortilla Chips A Latin-owned company, Soñar! means “to dream.” In a nation of dreamers, the female co-founded snack brand’s mission is to celebrate Latin culture. Soñar! does this with their organic, grain-free chips by donating 1% of sales to the Latino Community Foundation. In this period of unrest, communities of color continue to experience discrimination, under representation and inequality. Soñar! raises awareness that diversity is underrepresented in all walks of life. This includes the natural products industry, which has a long way to go to ensure products are inclusive of all cultures coexisting in America. A Dozen Cousins Heirloom Rice Mix With its new Heirloom Rice Mix, A Dozen Cousins celebrates diversity of cultures by resurrecting heirloom and heritage varieties of rice prominent among the African Diaspora. A Dozen Cousins brings consumers the opportunity to experience African culture by sourcing heirloom rice such as Carolina Gold Rice recently revived since it’s production (by slaves) was abandoned after the civil war, Brazilian long grain rice representing African-inspired food of Bahia, and Nigerian Ofada rice—a West African foodway. LOOP Mission LOOP Juices Loop and circularity are becoming recognizable terms in the lexicon of sustainability to replace linear, short-term, end-of-life systems. LOOP Mission saw the value and opportunity in misfit produce by building a manufacturing facility on the property of a major produce distributor. Turning 16 tons of wasted fruit and vegetables a day, LOOP Mission offers delicious fruit juices with hidden superfoods and veggies and helps diminish the world’s growing food waste issue. The founders didn’t stop their opportunistic thinking there though—they innovated against their own waste stream by upcycling their juiced pulp into dog treats and pizza crusts, and even orange peels distilled into liquor. It’s a whole new look at ‘one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.’

Mackerel, a neglected and underutilized fish, is high in protein, omega-3s and B-12 vitamins. Being low in the food chain, these fish quickly reproduce and are sourced from a fisherman co-op in Spain that has been using the same hook and line method for over 100 years. The best thing since sliced bread is right.
Best New Hemp-CBD Product CBDfx Turmeric and Spriulina Gummies Gummies can be a challenge to make, but these gummies from CBDfx do not have that over-the-top hempiness about them—nor, for that matter, the color of turmeric or the dank of spirulina. That’s no easy feat. Plus, a sprinkling of organic sugar makes them glisten like the trichomes from Humboldt County. We like how the brand embraces natural superfoods, which makes this stand out from other hemp gummies. The hemp CBD oil is extracted using supercritical CO2, which is clean. Further, each batch of gummies is independently tested by third-party labs for quality. Gaia Herbs Hemp & Herbs Calm Leave it to Gaia to develop a thoughtfully curated formulation that would stand on its own as a traceable, transparent, high-quality botanical blend. The hemp is extracted via uber-clean steam distillation and it’s certified by the U.S. Hemp Authority. Bring on the terps! Spinster Sisters Co. It smells nice, thanks to classic ingredients that both cool and warm the skin, including camphor, menthol, arnica, cayenne pepper, habanero peppers and essential oils to go along with the 250 mg of non-GMO CBD. It smells just divine. We also like the all-in enviro ethic from the woman-owned Spinster Sisters—the Colorado company is wind-powered and the product itself is biodegradable. There are no sulfates, phthalates, parabens or pesticides present. It makes for a nice, clean, convenient package for sore muscles.

To create this product, the company started with a traditional Indian dish (masoor dal) and added coconut and butternut squash to create a complete plant-based protein. This aligns with consumers’ growing desire to eat more plants and experience international flavors in a convenient, ready-to-eat format.
Best New Supplement Nutiva Organic MCT Protein Yes, this protein powder is on trend, using plant protein sources from pea, pumpkin, sunflower and hemp. It’s also got six grams of MCTs from coconut that’s keto-certified. There’s another four grams of BCAAs to support muscles and reduce recovery time. Can it ring any more bells? Well, yes. Nutiva also donates 1% of sales to regenerative agriculture farming practices because so much of the climate crisis can be ameliorated by the agricultural sector. Of course, it’s also USDA-certified Organic, Non-GMO Project verified, paleo, vegan, dairy free, grain free and gluten free, with no added sugar or stevia. Nutiva also enacted the City Fruit Tree Initiative in the Bay Area town of Richmond, giving 13,000 low-income children access to 50,000 pounds of fresh fruit. No extra charge for the warm fuzzies. Organifi Pure The gut-brain axis is an emerging area of microbiome research. It turns out the gastrointestinal tract is connected to the brain. Organifi’s Pure nourishes the gut with prebiotics (very on-trend), digestive enzymes and apple cider vinegar. The brain, meanwhile, is supported with lion’s mane mushrooms and coffee berry—the latter shown in studies to increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which supports the growth and maintenance of neurons, which are key information-transmitters throughout the brain and body. Then, the leftover pulp from the coffee berry (cascara) is used to power the farm itself. Organifi is USDA-certified organic, non-GMO, gluten free, soy free, dairy free, vegan and glyphosate free. Zhou Nutrition Water Enhancers In today’s modern world, shoppers want nutrition coupled with convenience. Best New Savory or Salty Snack Brad’s Plant Based Foods Everything Zucchini Veggie Flats Tangy, seedy and all-around a better better-for-you alternative to your average cracker, Brad’s Veggie Flats are delicious in a way that many vegetable-forward alternatives aren’t. This USDA-certified Organic product also boasts a solid six grams of protein per serving and can fulfill two prominent diets—plant-based and keto—through an innovative way to enjoy dips and spreads without unnecessary add-ins. Brad’s only uses organic ingredients that are air dried so as to remain as close to their original form as possible, and because of this the ingredients pack a protein- and fiber-filled punch. Ka-Pop! Red & Green Sriracha Chips Ka-Pop! has totally nailed the flavor profile and texture here—this latest iteration of its air popped sorghum-based chip line has the addictive quality that consumers want in an indulgent snack, but with zero of the top 12 allergens and way more fiber. As an added bonus, sorghum is an ancient grain that happens to use three times less water than corn does and can be grown as a regenerative crop. It is a nutrient-dense ingredient as well, with high levels of potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc and more. Late July No Grain Tortilla Chips These five-ingredient chips are a grain- and (surprisingly) nut-free dream—Late July uses a blend of the tigernut root vegetable in conjunction with cassava root flour to mimic the crunch and flavor of a regular tortilla chip. It’s paleo-friendly, certified gluten free and contains chia seeds for added health benefits. Late July has notably partnered with TerraCycle to offer consumers an opportunity to recycle its snack line’s packaging.

I Amaranth is bringing this ingredient to the U.S. market in an innovative way with flavors Chipotle Himalayan Salt and Habanero & Himalayan Salt, making for a unique spicy peanut and earthy flavor profile. Brass Roots Grain Free Crunch Puffs Grain-free snacks might be a dime a dozen these days, but Brass Roots' Grain Free Crunch Puffs caught our eye for its use of sacha inchi, a seed native to South America and Southeast Asia that's high in protein and omega-3s. We're big fans of the white cheddar flavor because it's vegan (yet tastes cheesy), has no sugar and boast 8 grams of protein per serving. Brass Roots also partners with New Orleans youth organizations to donate snacks and provide nutrition and wellness education to underserved communities. Taste Republic Gluten-Free Vegan Cheese Ravioli Take one bite of Taste Republic's Gluten Free Vegan Cheese Ravioli and we bet you won't miss the traditional take on ravioli. Taste Republic has somehow created an Italian food staple that's allergy-friendly with rich taste and seemingly perfect al dente texture when cooked. As a certified B Corp, this company is also using business as a force for good while transforming what it means to be gluten free. (Hint: You don't have to compromise on taste or texture anymore.) Worthy Blendie Bowls Worthy makes eating nutrient-dense, plant-based snacks extra simple with its Worthy Blendie Bowls packed with fruits, veggies, chia and legumes (depending on the flavor). With over 1,000 nominations for the 2020 Natural Products Expo West NEXTY Awards, the New Hope Network judging team had a monumental task in selecting a handful of finalists across 22 categories. The competition was stiff and the judging process took hours, but in the end, 76 products have risen to the top. With more organic product nominations than ever before, the awards shed light on what will be seen at Expo West in March, and the forecast looks good.
From here, an elite panel of guest industry judges will join the New Hope Network team to help select the single winner in each category.
In addition to the 76 NEXTY Awards products that impressed us, we’re recognizing six finalists for our NEXTY Consumer Choice Awards—a branch of the NEXTY Awards program that allows brands to have their product sampled with 1,000 targeted health consumers, in-turn receiving valuable product ratings and feedback. Learn more about the new Consumer Choice Awards.
Only one product per category will be awarded a coveted NEXTY, to be presented to the winners on Thursday, March 5, directly at their booths. We'll also award three NEXTY Consumer Choice winners, two NEXTY Gold winners who will be awarded at the Hall of Legends event on Thursday, March 5, and four Editors’ Choice NEXTY winners that will be selected on the last day of the show.
What are the NEXTY Awards?
The NEXTY Awards recognize the pinnacle of excellence in the natural products industry, elevating impactful brands and products that inspire a healthy, sustainable future for people and planet. Twice a year, New Hope Network and industry judges gather to celebrate products coming from the brands driving the natural products industry forward.
How are the products judged?
The judging for the NEXTY Awards is a two-tier process consisting of a preliminary judging and a final judging. In the final judging, the New Hope Network content, marketing, standards and NEXT Data & Insights teams sample each nominated product, reviewing its nomination and sampling the product, narrowing the field down to a handful of finalists in each category. In the final judging, the New Hope team is joined by a rotating panel of invited industry judges to select the winners. For both rounds of judging, the judges evaluate on this primary criteria:
Innovation: The product or company shows truly creative thinking and execution (not a "me too" approach); uses a newly discovered or rediscovered ingredient, flavor profile, technique or process; fills a legitimate (though perhaps not yet recognized) natural products market need or niche; and/or is predicted to have longer-term impact in the industry.
Inspiration: The product or company adheres to an unusual or new mission targeting an issue or problem not yet widely addressed; its message/mission is clearly communicated, focused and effective, with real, wide-reaching potential or already proven positive social or environmental impact.
Integrity: The product or company takes a creative, next-gen approach to clean ingredient(s), sustainability, transparency, traceability and safety/security.
