Paleo picks from Natural Products Expo East
I've long been a fan of Simple Squares, and I was delighted to rediscover them at Natural Products Expo East as a Paleo treat. The organic bars really do keep it simple with just nuts, honey, vanilla, sea salt and herbs. I got a kick out of the new Paleo branding found on the bottom of the product box. Perhaps that label will make it to the front-of-pack soon?
It's not marketed as a Paleo bar but, it's ingredients certainly adhere to the dietary plan. Using almond butter, raisins, cranberries, coconut, sunflower and pumpkin seeds and a touch of honey, this straightforward bar is a perfect hunter-gatherer treat.
Though the brand is not promoting itself as Paleo, it's not hard to imagine our primal ancestors knoshing on this grain-free trail mix. Each pack contains strips of grass-fed beef and a separate pouch of nuts and dried fruit. The balanced blend of protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrate is a great way to stay fueled even if you're not running from wild animals.
These Paleo-friendly cookies use just nuts, seeds and berries. Each flavor is based on a different region of the world and features ingredients that would have been familiar to our early ancestors. Try the Tropical which has coconut, macadamia nuts and ginger.
This new favorite continues to convert the "meat bar" dubious. I was skeptical too, until I gave the product a try. Think of it like jerky meets, nuts and berries. That the brand is using pasture raised protein that comes in a beautiful, wild-west reminiscent package has served to boost attention. Luckily, it also delivers on flavor.

The Paleo diet has a lot going for it. It's backed by doctors, promotes whole foods and is supported by the increasingly popular workout regimen CrossFit. A few new brands are taking a gamble that those attributes will ensure their brand a win with consumers hunting for convenient Paleo options. A handful of Paleo-specific snacks popped up for the first time on the show floor. Established brands adopted messaging to speak to Paleo consumers. Is this a sign of more to come? I hate to say it but, I'm already looking forward to Expo West in March.
