Dehydration was not an issue at Natural Products Expo West, thanks to the hundreds of brands that were giving out samples of beverages. The following products are just a small group of drinks that stood out from the crowd with impressive nutrient profiles, functional ingredients, conscious sourcing practices and notably, lower sugar.
This new brand pioneers a relatively new ingredient in the natural space—bamboo leaf! Igzu says that bamboo has a high silica content, which may be important to support bone and connective tissue. But we like it for USDA Organic ingredients, the sustainability story behind bamboo (which doesn’t need fertilizer and grows very fast), and floral flavors like Lavender Peach, Elderflower Citrus and Hibiscus Blackberry—all for just 40 calories per bottle. igzulife.com
Bhakti Chai’s spicy, fiery chai concentrate branches into the bubbly space. We're thrilled about these 60-calorie carbonated teas, each made with organic ingredients that nod to traditional chai flavors. This yerba mate tea also contains organic spearmint leaves and a lot of fresh ginger. Served in a 12-ounce glass bottle. bhaktichai.com Related 12 noteworthy vegan finds at Natural Products Expo West 2016
The makers of Vermont-sourced maple water Drink Maple are expanding their category into a refreshing, summery beverage that contains just one ingredient: USDA Organic watermelon. The coolest part about this product is how the brand is committed to sourcing ingredients from Vermont, which boosts the state’s economy. drinkmaple.com Related 19 NEXTY Award winners revealed at Expo West NEXTY Editors' Choice Awards at Expo West 2016
I was intrigued by this interesting pour by new exhibitor Immordl. While the bottled product was not available to photograph, we tasted this herbal formula—filled with organic energizing herbs like guarana, rhodiola rosea, cordyceps, maca, Siberian eleuthero and cayenne on tap, and it was well balanced and flavorful. All ingredients are organic and, in many cases, wild-harvested. immordl.com
This new company impressed with USDA Organic, fair trade herbal, green and black tea and spice blends inspired by myriad countries and cultures, including Turkish, Persian, Brazilian, Indian, Thai, Mandarin and English. The brand sources teas as close to the product’s namesake as possible. For example, the Turkish blend contains Rize black tea from Rize Province, Tukey, organic buckwheat honey from Wisconsin and organic pomegranate juice concentrate from the Midwest region of the U.S. lifebasicsorganics.com Related 12 noteworthy vegan finds at Natural Products Expo West 2016
This gorgeous bottle is filled with even more beautiful, clean ingredients: organic sprouted almonds, organic medjool dates, vanilla bean, purified water and pink Himalayan salt. Pop & Bottle is OK with making a product without fillers, emulsifiers and stabilizers—meaning that natural separation occurs. Give it a shake, and it’s ready to drink. Pop & Bottle is proving that natural consumers are ready to embrace milk alternatives that don’t entirely replicate dairy milk. (Also check out another clean-almond brand at Expo West, Three Trees). popandbottle.com
There were ample clean, nutritious milk alternatives at Expo. But Rawpothecary’s coffee protein blend is unique because it’s both dairy free and nut free. This beverage contains organic coffee, dates, organic quinoa protein, hemp protein, pea protein, organic sunflower seeds, organic pumpkin seeds and organic coconut nectar. Each bottle delivers 18 grams protein, 15 grams dietary fiber and 11 grams good fats. With 267 calories per bottle, this makes a decent meal replacement, too. rawpothecary.com
We’re usually impressed with Rebbl’s ethically sourced beverages that incorporate adaptogenic herbs, mushrooms and coconut sweeteners. This product was no exception. The brand’s newest launch is a delicious chocolate (and vanilla chai-flavored) beverage that contains 16 grams of plant-based protein. The dark chocolate version also features USDA Organic maca, ashwagandha and reishi mushroom. rebbl.co Related 12 noteworthy vegan finds at Natural Products Expo West 2016
A low-cal, bubbly soda water that’s infused with real fruit and vegetable juice. Also available in grapefruit, lemon and raspberry-lime flavoring, this tasty beverage brand doesn’t add any cane sugar to the triple-filtered sparkling water. spindriftfresh.com
This tasty new beverage from Steaz contains organic prickly pear concentrate (it’s the second ingredient), cane sugar, lemon juice, natural flavors, green tea and stevia. It’s filled with natural electrolytes. But we like this Cactus Water more because it’s a unique flavor profile, and because Steaz follows triple-bottom line business practices by buying fair trade tea and sugar. http://steaz.com/
Teeccino’s masterful dandelion, chai and hibiscus tea blends are invigorated with a boost of nitrogen microbubbles, lending this beverage a smooth, almost milky consistency. While Dandelion Nitro is currently available only on tap (breweries, here’s your nonalcoholic option), Teeccino is exploring options to expand this cool product into take-away bottles. teeccino.com Related Meet foodservice demands large and small in your health food store Create a successful food culture to win with prepared foods
