Wize Coffee Leaf recently rolled out a new tea filtering material from One Earth, made from non-GMO sugar cane. The new mesh teabag is backyard compostable in three weeks, as compared to the two years it takes for existing teabags to break down.
Two female entrepreneurs from Boulder, Colorado, recently launched Earthseed, a line of subscription-based supplements designed for plant-based lifestyles. Not only are the nutrients customized for vegan eaters, but the packaging—everything from the cellulose pill bottle to its labels, tamper-proof seals, lidding, desiccants and mailers—is completely biodegradable.
Electrolyte drink mix brand Liquid I.V. launched a new Seaberry Hydration Multiplier with fully sustainable packaging materials, including a carton made of rPET plastic taken from landfills as well as its first-ever 100% compostable hydration stick.
All of REBBL’s 12-ounce drinks are now packaged in bottles made entirely from post-consumer recycled plastic, which the company says puts them among the first in the industry to do so. According to CEO Michele Kessler, switching 20 million REBBL bottles annually to recycled plastic reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 922 tons, roughly the environmental benefit provided by 1,086 acres of U.S. forests in one year.
Energy and soft drink producer Hell Energy recently signed a contract with aluminum company Hydro to produce its line from CIRCAL, a recycled aluminum with a certified content of minimum 75% recycled post-consumer scrap.
Primal Kitchen’s Frozen Bowl meals are packaged in a fiber made from upcycled sugar cane grown in the U.S. These bowls are made without PFAs (per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances) and are in the process of becoming certified compostable and recyclable.
Refrigerated wellness shot brand So Good So You recently launched BtrBtl, a trademarked packaging that looks similar to other plastics but contains a proprietary additive allowing it to biodegrade at landfills at an accelerated rate. This bottle breaks down in years rather than centuries, without leaving microplastics behind.
It might not be a natural product, but it’s an innovation the industry can get behind. Diageo, makers of Johnnie Walker, created the first 100% plastic-free, paper-based spirits bottle, made entirely from sustainably sourced wood. Other paper-based bottles use a plastic coating inside; this one does not. The bottle will appear on shelves in early 2021.

It’s no secret that sustainability matters to consumers, and that they’re often willing to pay more for products they see as being beneficial to the environment, whether that means organic food or clean label beverages. But a new report from NPD Group says it’s not just the product, but also the product packaging that matters, with one in 10 U.S. adults even switching to a different food or beverage brand in pursuit of earth-friendly packaging.
Here are just a few brands making the leap to compostable, upcycled and other innovative packaging to appeal to this ever-growing group.
