The nosh: A bona fide candy bar that is entirely vegan and USDA Organic. Amy’s employs sweet and flavorful ingredients like tapioca syrup, dark chocolate, coconut, almonds, cane sugar and more to craft this slightly chewy candy. It’s also gluten free. What’s cool: While there are plenty of organic dark chocolate bars in the natural space that can satisfy a sweet tooth, it’s rare to find a true natural option that can compete with old favorites like Milky Way or Snickers. Amy’s line of Andy’s Dandy Candy, which include Chewy, Dreamy, Crispy and more, clean up a beloved category. We also like how each package contains two bars—one for you, and one for a friend. amys.com
The nosh: This pure, roasted carob powder hails from down under and features a slew of certification seals including USDA Organic, Australian Certified Organic, Kosher Pareve and more. Delicious when incorporated into cakes, muffins, smoothies and more. What’s cool: This carob is grown and manufactured in Australia and run by a family business. australiancarobs.com
The nosh: Those familiar with Colorado nightlife will recognize Cosmo’s Spicy Ranch as the toothsome accouterment to late-night pizza runs. Now, this brand has launched a retail-ready version of its signature spicy ranch, made with mayo, salt, spices, lemon, buttermilk, sour cream and more. Keep it refrigerated and smother onto pizza (duh), tacos and more. What’s cool: We love how Cosmos carries a dairy-free version of spicy ranch, making it accessible to those who can’t handle lactose well. One caveat about the Extra Spicy Ranch—this product seems to have quite a few binders and emulsifiers in it, including carrageenan, modified food starch, xanthan gum and locust bean gum—not necessarily bad, but consumers may balk at seeing so many ingredients. cosmospicyranch.com
The nosh: Intensely lemony little bites filled with almonds, sunflower seeds, puffed millet, puffed rice and blueberries. Lightly sweetened with brown rice syrup and honey, these crunchy snacks deliver 100 calories and 3 grams of protein per serving. What’s cool: Just eight pronounceable ingredients comprise these guilt-free snacks, perfect for taking on a hike or throwing into a gym bag. Also vegan, gluten free, soy free and dairy free. frontierbites.com
The nosh: You know those crunchy, half-popped corn kernels that didn’t quite make it to fluffiness on the bottom of the popcorn bag? The folks at Halfpops loved them so much, they made all of their popcorn like that. Each take-along pouch of “curiously crunchy popcorn” is filled with non-GMO popcorn, popped in non-GMO canola oil and flavored with a dusting of cream and salt. What’s cool: We’re smitten with this unique snack—especially thanks to the variety of tasty flavors like Brooklyn Dill Pickle and Black Truffle & Sea Salt. Also, we love the new bright packaging. halfpops.com
The nosh: A deep, dark sauce that is sweetened just with tapioca syrup. Also contains chocolate liquor, fair trade cocoa powder and vanilla extract. What’s cool: I appreciate how just four tasty ingredients are in this sauce, perfect for drizzling over Jeni’s myriad ice cream flavors. Also keep an eye out for Jeni’s Honey Butterscotch Sauce, made with just honey, sugar, cream, butter and sea salt. Heat slowly and enjoy. jenis.com
The nosh: A new white whole wheat flour from King Arthur, this “identity-preserved” option is sourced from sustainable farmers that don’t till their fields, practice crop rotation and use less water. Made from certified hard white winter wheat seeds that are selected for optimum baking and growing performance. What’s cool: King Arthur is a great company. It’s the oldest flour company in America, is 100 percent employee-owned and a B Corp brand. So we were pretty excited to see that the 1790-founded brand is serving a growing consumer base that wants to know where their food is grown and comes from. kingarthurflour.com
The nosh: This two-ingredient beverage is made with water and fair trade USDA Organic Arabica coffee. Pretty straight forward, right? Wrong! Lucky Jack is packaged with a nitrogen infusion, making this cold-brew coffee slightly effervescent. What’s cool: Lucky Jack’s pirate-themed packaging, rustic brass tab opening and nitro technology make this beverage a hipster’s paradise. Read: you feel really trendy when sipping it. luckyjackcoffee.com
The nosh: A portable oatmeal cup blended with gluten-free whole grain rolled oats, Vermont maple sugar, brown sugar, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, chia seeds, cinnamon and cardamom. Each serving delivers 240 calories, 8 grams of protein and 6 grams of fiber. What’s cool: Thanks to their portability, breakfast cups are going to continue rising in popularity, I think. Modern Oats helps expand the category by offering a slew of SKUs that contain whole grains, seeds and nuts. Just make sure to watch the sugar content. I don't think the Vermont Maple flavor needs both brown sugar and maple sugar—I would prefer a breakfast with less than 12 grams sugar. modernoats.com
The nosh: A bubbly soda that contains organic cultured water kefir and probiotic strains, Valencia orange juice, ruby grapefruit juice, lemon juice, stevia and more. What’s cool: Obi is one of the only brands I’ve seen that employs raw water kefir to infuse beverages with 20 different probiotic cultures. Plus, Obi is low calorie and low sugar. Each vegan, dairy-free bottle contains a reasonable 5 grams sugar and just 20 calories. obisoda.com
The nosh: Technically a supplement, this two-sip shot is designed to aid with healthy inflammation response following exercise. Made with a variety of USDA Organic fruit and vegetable concentrates, including beet, carrot, apple, lemon, celery powder, ginger and turmeric. What’s cool: Red Ace is a prime example of a natural exercise enhancer that lauds whole-food ingredients. Also available in a Beets & Greens variety that contains spinach, celery and kale powder and more. redaceorganics.com
The nosh: A unique USDA Organic powder that features tigernuts (not nuts, but small, round tubers) that contain ample prebiotic fiber (food for probiotics). This blend also features pea protein powder and just three grams of sugar for a healthy smoothie. What’s cool: Add two tablespoons of this mixture to a morning smoothie for added fiber. We love how Organic Gemini is making tigernuts—a relatively obscure ingredient—more accessible by incorporating it into familiar delivery methods. Also available in toothsome flavors, such as Cacao Bean. organicgemini.com
The nosh: A meat snack made with pork, spices, sea salt, celery juice powder, lactic acid starter (not made from milk), and wrapped in a collagen encasing. Each 70-calorie stick delivers 8 grams of protein. What’s cool: The format of this meat snack is reminiscent of those gas station staples—you know, the ones packed with nitrates and meat from dubious sources? But Vermont Smoke & Cure uses humanely raised meats from family farmers, and includes traceability information on the website where consumers can learn what farms their meat came from. Plus, the meat sticks contain 45 percent less salt than leading snack sticks. vermontsmokeandcure.com
The nosh: This Denver-based brand brings Thai flavors to commonly used condiments including salsas, sauces and this relish, made with cucumbers, vinegar, Thai chilis, lime juice, garlic and more. The result: A nuanced topping for sandwiches, salads, burgers and hot dogs. What’s cool: The next sriracha? Perhaps. I can envision foodies incorporating Yai’s line of unique condiments into every meal. yaisthai.com
