B Lab on April 14 announced its 120 companies to earn 2015 Best for the World accolades. The companies represent the top 10 percent of point earners on the nonprofit's Certified B Corporation assessment. B Lab also honored companies as Best for Community, Best for the Environment and Best for Workers. Chico Bag, Love & Hummus and CORE Foods were among environment honorees. King Arthur Flour Company and Yin & Yang natural products brokerage were noted as Best for Community. Here are the six food companies making their mark as Best for the World.
Grounds for Change founders say they want to show that caring for workers and the environment means good business. The company covers more than 80 percent of employee and family health insurance premiums and offers more than 30 personal and vacation days. All coffee is certified organic and fair trade, and the company uses 100 percent renewable energy at its corporate facilities while also purchasing carbon credits to offset 100 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.
If there's a company that exemplifies social enterprise, it is Greyston Bakery. The company focuses on personal and job development by hiring workers with backgrounds that include homelessness, incarceration, substance abuse, welfare dependence, illiteracy and domestic violence. All of its profits support foundation self-sufficiency programs in Yonkers, New York.
Down to Earth Markets supports the local food system in a big way. It started as a small farmers market and now is a network of 20 New York markets focusing on sustainable food and business. This Certified B Corporation ranks highest in the customer index of its certification report.
Andean Naturals is responsible for about one-third of the North American quinoa as it connects South American farmers to U.S. food companies. While the company actively innovates in the quinoa market, its community focus gained high marks on its B Impact Report. More than 30 percent of Andean's suppliers are women or minority owned, and the company uses third-party social and environmental metrics in selecting suppliers.
The natural foods community knows Alter Eco well for its farmer-direct products including quinoa, jasmine rice, cane sugar and, of course, chocolate. But the company gets B Corp props for its particularly high scores in the environment and community portions of the certification scorecard. Alter Eco not only features Fair Trade Certified products, but it banks with a local, independent bank; offers employees time off to volunteer; and has policies that promote majority-women and minority-owned suppliers.
Caravela Coffee is a vertically integrated green coffee company that scored an impressive 92 for its community efforts in which it educates on sustainable farming practices and building local workforce alongside its commitment to quality coffee.
