New Research Finds Aquamin™ Improves Bone Mineral Density

New research has found Marigot’s multi-mineral ingredient, Aquamin™, can reduce bone damage caused by high impact exercise. The study, carried out at the University of Colorado, measured both the effect of Aquamin Soluble on levels of the parathyroid hormone (PTH), a potent stimulator of bone resorption, and loss of bone mineral density. These latest results clearly show that a dose of Aquamin before exercise is an effective method of reducing PTH hormone and maintaining bone mineral density.

Exercise is known to have a positive effect on bone health, but high impact sports, such as long distance cycling, can cause severe damage. Tour de France cyclists, for example, can lose up to 25 per cent of their bone mineral density in the three weeks they are on the road. This is thought to be due to an increase in hormones, such as parathyroid hormone (PTH), which leeches calcium from the bone.

These recent trials involved 20 competitive male cyclists, who took Aquamin either before or during three 35km time trials or placebo. Aquamin Soluble, when taken before exercise, caused a statistically significant reduction of PTH to 55.8 ± 67.2 pg/mL compared with 74.0 ± 63.6 pg/mL for placebo. The participants who took Aquamin during the time trial also experienced a reduction in PTH, to 58.0 ± 77.9 pg/mL.

David O’ Leary, commercial manager at Marigot, commented: “Loss of bone mineral density is a serious issue for many professional and amateur athletes. We’re extremely pleased with the positive result of these trials, as they point towards a natural solution to the problem. Aquamin Soluble, which was used in the study, dissolves completely in water meaning it can be easily used in functional waters and sports drinks. It provides a convenient way for athletes to protect themselves from bone damage and enjoy sport as normal.”

Aquamin is a natural multi-mineral ingredient derived from the red seaweed Lithothamnium Calcareum. Containing calcium, magnesium and 74 other trace minerals, Aquamin has been shown to offer bone health benefits in a number of areas, including osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and sports-related damage. It can be incorporated into many applications and its unique, porous honeycomb structure means Aquamin does not impact on the taste or texture of the final product.
