For the first time, the AHA has proposed upper limits for the daily intake of added sugars, which was published in the August 24 issue of Circulation. The AHA sets the limit at nine teaspoons of sugar, or 150 calories a day, for men and six teaspoons, or 100 calories a day, for women. Although sugars sourced from natural fruits and vegetables are considered healthy, added sugars like those found in soft drinks and processed foods should be limited, the AHA said.

The biggest culprits for the excess sugars, according to the AHA, are soft drinks, followed by processed foods and candy. With about eight teaspoons of added sugar, a regular 12-ounce soft drink will single-handedly put women over the recommended daily limit.
