NPA toasts natural industry standouts with awards

In an industry characterized by big hearts and mavericks, the Natural Products Association will give special recognition to people who have greatly surpassed the call of their business duties at the association’s annual trade show at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas, July 17-19.

The Burton Kallman Scientific Award, which recognizes outstanding scientific contributions to the natural products industry, will go to Harry H.S. Fong. Fong researches anti-cancer agents in herbal medicine as professor of pharmacognosy in the department of medicinal chemistry and pharmacognosy at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

In honor of his influence in the natural products industry, the President’s Award will be presented to Rand Skolnick, president and CEO of Leonia, N.J.-based Solgar Vitamin and Herb, for helping to expand the market of dietary supplements on an international scale.

Robert F. Fox, a partner at Cook+Fox Architects in New York City, will receive the Rachel Carson Environmental Award for contributing to the green-building movement.

The 2008 Industry Champion Award, which recognizes contributions to the natural products industry above and beyond commercial success, will go to Gene Clark, Terry Lemerond, Neil E. Levin and Judy Lindberg McFarland. Founder of Gene’s Health Food Inc. in Owensboro, Ky., Clark also hosts a TV show called “It’s Your Health.” Lemerond owns gourmet food store Terry Naturally in Green Bay, Wis., and founded Enzymatic Therapy EuroPharma. Levin is the nutrition education manager for NOW Foods in Bloomingdale, Ill. McFarland offers nutritional counseling at Lindberg Nutrition in Torrance, Calif.

The Clinician Award honors licensed health care practitioners whose work exemplifies the best standards for noninvasive and integrative medicine. Dr. Aaron E. Katz, director for the Center for Holistic Urology in New York City, will receive the award along with Dr. Derrick Lonsdale and Dr. Jay Udani. Lonsdale has written more than 100 papers dealing with therapeutic nutritional supplementation and Udani is the medical director of the integrative medicine program at Northridge Hospital Medical Center in California.

Recognizing companies that integrate education, environment and health into their business, the Socially Responsible Retailer Award will go to Good Foods Grocery in Richmond, Va., LifeSource Natural Foods in Salem, Ore., and Marlene’s Market and Deli in Federal Way, Wash. The NPA will announce the Statesman/­Stateswoman Award recipient, given to allies in the legislative arena, at a later date.
