Former commissioners: Make FDA an independent agency

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration "is trapped in a structural problem," according to six former commissioners at a panel at Spotlight Health at the Aspen Ideas Festival this week. The former officials criticized the agency, which operates under the umbrella of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services but is funded by the Department of Agriculture, for being plagued by bureaucracy, politics and micro management, saying it would benefit from operating as an independent agency.
