Unboxed: 6 Demeter USA-certified foods that show biodynamic is rising

Organic satisfies a need for food that was grown to certain standards. But can we do better than organic? What farming practice is even more regenerative for the environment?

Enter biodynamic farming, a method that treats the entire farm as one holistic entity to restore soil health, cultivate biodiversity and foster a triple bottom-line approach that includes ecological, social and, not to be undermined, economic sustainability. While biodynamic farming predates organic (it was first conceptualized by social activist Dr. Rudolf Steiner in the 1920s), it’s just starting to achieve greater notoriety and support. The chief biodynamic certifier, Demeter USA, is the most influential promoter of biodynamic ag, and works to educate consumers on what this method of growing actually means, and why it is worth supporting.

As consumers deepen their understanding of the connection between soil quality and food flavor and nutrition, biodynamic has ample room to grow. While the wine industry has embraced biodynamic agriculture (partly because this growing method produces excellent ingredients), natural food and beverage products that feature the biodynamic certification seal Demeter USA are growing in quantity. While supply still remains a challenge—it's very intensive to tend to a biodynamic farm—here are a few of our fave Demeter USA-certified products that help grow this movement.
